Most of the salsa classes we propose are 'on1' (simplifying a bit, it means that dancers are coming forward and backward on the first and fith count, depending if they're leaders or followers). In salsa 'on2' dancer 'break' on the second and the sixth count (meaning: they change direction on 2 and on 6, in the New York style the leader steps back on 2 and forward on 6). Sounds maybe complicated but it's not that difficult.
Other question people often ask: but what's the point in dancing on2? The point is that in most salsa music there's a percussion accent on the second and sixth count ... so it is not so strange to accentuate in dancing (because breaking forward or backward is making an accent in your dancing) what you can hear in the music. It is not so that on2 dancers start on the second, they also start together with the music, which is on 1, but they simply break on the second (and sixth count). Just try out for yourself, that's the best advice i guess i can give. You will see for yourself that it has another feeling, another flavour one could say and you will maybe start to understand why certain salsa dancers are sometimes fanatical about this 'on2' dancing.
Now we have the chance to have an excellent teacher at our school, Gaëtan Collaert, who is for many aspects in the first place a salsa on2 dancer. The classes are meant for 'switchers'. These are people who have some experience in LA style (or Cuban style) but not or not much in 'salsa on2' aka 'mambo on2'.
Classes are every Friday, 6.45 to 8pm in Appeltuin (Weldadigheidsstraat 74), starting from February 17th onwards. The first class on February 17th can be taken as a free try out class. If you want to enrol for this try out class or enrol for the series click here.
